I
am not designing for my vision of my clients' lives. The finished
space should be their home, not my image of how they should
live."
Whether it's a redecorating assignment, a renovation project
or a new construction venture, the design process begins with
intensive interviews structured to uncover what the clients
want out of these rooms and how they want to live in them.
Clients are asked to create a wish list; separate lists if
the job involves husband and wife. "It helps me to understand
the clients' priorities-and a written list helps make the
project real for the client," says Ms. Storer.
Renderings are an integral part of this design process. "Floor
plans and swatches are important. However, using these tools
alone, only about 10% of any given group of people have the
visual skills to imagine the finished space," says Ms.
Storer. Full-color renderings provide a sense of goal so that
clients are never surprised by the final outcome. Clients
are thoroughly educated about what to expect before, during
and after the project. "I want my clients to be as comfortable
with what I do as I am. The more I can educate them, the happier
we all are," she declares.
Ms. Storer takes a team approach to working with builder,
architect and homeowner, but acts as the advocate for the
client. "Homeowners need an extra set of eyes and an
opinion that is on their side. The architect creates plans
to communicate with the builder; the interior designer helps
make sure these plans include what's in the client's heart."
Ms. Storer is particularly sensitive to the role of artwork
in interior design. Her educational background includes a
BFA in design from the New York School of Interior Design
and a BFA in art history from Rutgers. Clients who collect
art for art's sake have a designer who shares their passion
and possesses an educated eye. Those who view art as a design
element have a designer who can guide them towards choices
that will enhance a particular space. She has relationships
with many fine artists who, in consultation with her and the
client, will customize a work in progress.
Ms. Storer is a professional member of the American Society
of Interior Designers and is National Council of Interior
Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certified. |
